'Nothing better than passing on your craft to the younger generation'

Hazerswoude-Dorp, August 8, 2023. The Utrecht metal companies Smederij Meerkerk from Meerkerk, RiGro Las en Montage from Montfoort and Hamoen L.M.B. from Ameide have been nominated for the OOM Award Midden-Nederland 2023. The OOM Award is the award for the most active (metal) training company in the region. The winner will be announced during the annual meeting of Metaalunie district Midden on September 20.

"We do all kinds of training, at all levels and for everyone," says practical trainer Krijn de Vroome of Smederij Meerkerk. "From young apprentices coming to poke around to the employees who have been working here longer. For a company like ours, this is essential, period. Not only because it produces good professionals. It also provides motivation. Here everyone enjoys going to work every day, together with all colleagues."

Rick Groen, owner and hands-on trainer at RigGo Welding and Assembly, likes nothing better than passing on his craft to the younger generation. "Fortunately, we have enough young recruits here. We take them with us from the beginning in all aspects of our work. From reading drawings to welding and everything else involved. You see that they then go all the way. And so we can all make a great team. Then you do your job whistling."

Training is super important for a technical company like Hamoen L.M.B., says chief workshop and on-the-job training manager Nico Hakkesteegt. "The developments in our sector are rapid, so we have to keep up. So we put a lot of energy into that. For me, it's great to see how our employees continue to make strides and have more and more fun doing it. That really makes my practical trainer heart beat faster."

Professional jury
Nominations for the OOM Award are determined on the basis of the number of in-service training activities by the company's employees, the number of apprentices supervised and the number of internships offered. After the nomination, a professional jury visits all nominated companies. This jury then makes a final assessment. The winner is announced during the annual meeting of the Koninklijke Metaalunie in the relevant district.
